Agreed. You could get by, or get pulled aside and forced to check. Sometimes it seems that an FF tag on the bags helps, but honestly, I think the airport is more important. As you're flying an international route, keep in mind that carry on limits in most countries outside North America are much more strict, and agents may be more strict about letting people on with excess bags.

If I were you, I'd just stick to the published rules and avoid the hassle.
