Once the points from bonus or monthly spend on either card post to your SPG or Marriott or Merged account, then you can close the credit card without losing those points.
Both the cards do offer a free anniversary night annually (for the SPG Amex, that's a new benefit), so if you keep both cards, you'll get 2 free nights. I think that's the only real benefit to having both.
