Depends on the airport as well. I find YYZ to be fairly lax about it but airports with contract GA's tend to be very strict (eg SAN) - to the point of using the sizers in their literal sense. Your class of service and/or boarding zone will make a difference too. Zones 4 and 5 routinely get told to check their bags. As ltf says above though, YMMV
