China travel advice needed: GUC's from JFK to PVG or HKG
Long time reader, first time poster. I have never traveled internationally but need to go from NYC to Hong Kong and/or Shanghai for work in late February. I'm 6'3", 230 lbs, with a bad back, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get myself into business class without paying full freight. I'm a Delta DM. I do not currently have any GUC's but I will earn 2019 DM status within a couple of weeks. I don't know what I don't know, but questions include: When I get 2019 DM would I then have time to get GUC's as a choice benefit and book a late February flight? Does Delta even have a partner that accepts GUC's to PVG or HKG? I have a little bit of flexibility on which day I depart (a Sat or Sun) and which day I return (a Wed or Thu). My trip could begin in either Hong Kong or Shanghai, doesn't matter. A direct flight would be nice but more important is business class for the long haul portion. Anything I'm not thinking of or that I can do to maximize my chances?
Also, if I have to fly coach, I'm noticing that a round trip (code share Eastern China) from JFK to PVG is $1100 booked through Delta but only $800 through Expedia. If I book coach through Expedia, can I still try to use a GUC?
Any speculation on likelihood that a DM with a GUC gets the upgrade to either PVG or HKG?
Thanks for any help.
