I've never thought it "despicable" for an airline to follow the rules I know they have, but I bear no illusion that an airline should KWIA by default, always, eternally, and I'm 100% exempt from the rules because I'm such a "valued" member. YMMV. It must be nice to be such an important person who is entitled to this level of service.
