With last year's mess with Aeroplan offering LX F, when those tickets were cancelled by LX and Aeroplan (or whoever), people posted that Aeroplan returned the points to AX. No idea how many people this affected and in which countries. Others here may know more and have personal experience with this.
I call it something else because if it is a known problem and it's on both sides, then Aeroplan should just return the points to AX and be done with it. IMHO, neither of them are going to take the responsibility for anyone losing their routing due to the delay.
Unless others post their experiences here, we may not know more.
