Disruption protection for separate award tickets?

If your first flight into HKG is delayed and you miss your onward connection, will CX book you onto the next (CX or KA) flight?
- If there are no Y seats on the next flight, will they upgrade your cabin?

CX will meet you at your gate during tight connections. Is there a way to trigger this if your segments are on separate tickets / PNRs?

If it matters, I'm arriving in international CX J to connect onwards in KA Y (to PVG).

I understand there is policy and practice. Would be interested in hearing peoples' actual experiences as well !
