Did not speak with an officer, but did this last week (my membership expired in August, had applied) at a Global Entry kiosk. The warning screen I have gotten for the past couple of months telling me that my membership was expiring still appeared, and said that my membership was expiring in "-15 days". I suspect the system is programmed to let you get up to -180 days, then cuts you off.
do not bring this up with an officer, based on my sample of ~5 at ~5 different airports and 2 different agencies, none of them knew aboot this rule and one (which happens to have an faq on the website of their employer) said that was a violation. just leave it to the machine to figure this out lol.
