SNAs can be confirmed up to 5 days before arrival. It just gives you a leg up over others vying for the same upgrade. They are especially useful at hotels that don't have many suites. I would never go to the Moana Surfrider without applying SNAs and yet my suite upgrade is at best only 50% of the time. (They only have 3 suites in the SNA pool.)
