I used to live near DTW and many times tested myself versus the tram, especially on arrivals, as it seems I often arrived at the far end of the A terminals. I never jogged but walked briskly. Sometimes I took the tram and watched others who walked to see how far they made it too.
From the far end to the arrivals (middle) station, I could reliably beat the tram passengers for most situations. I only took it if it was just arriving when I was at the bottom of the escalators (then it was faster).
I never actually timed my walks, but 4.5 minutes from each far end of the terminal seems really fast. I don't think walking would reliably beat the tram from one end of the terminal to the other.
