Delta absolutely offers bereavement fares and not only in instances of death. Recently, my grandma was in the ICU and I had to purchase an expensive flight from SEA to CMH on very short notice. I did have to call the main Delta reservation line and had to provide the hospital and physician info. FWIW, they were able to give me $200 off of the listed fare on Delta.com, but they also gave my girlfriend a discounted rate on the same reservation. Even allowed us to pay for our own tickets with separate CC's. All in all, the Delta rep was extremely helpful and it was worth the time to save the $200.
Yes, they are call medical emergency fares. Instead of funeral home contact, they require the hospital/hospice information, attending physician information and relationship to the person who is ill.
I agree with others. This is a nice gesture by the airlines. I doubt that restaurants or food providers will offer sizable discounts for funeral gatherings.
