You do not have to pay for the hotel stay provided there is no possible non-overnight connection.
In your case, EVA may not provide free overnight hotel because you can fly from KUL on SUN, WED and FRI without overnight stay at TPE. There is no mention of STPC hotel in TPE on Malaysia to North America fares.
