We were at the Sheraton TriBeCa this weekend and happened to be at the Club up on the 21st floor as they were setting up for the evening spread of cold hors d'ouerves and beer & wine. Saw the attendant put out a cup with a couple dollar bills in it. Saw a line of about 10 folks VERY quickly congregate at the bar and get their beer and wine and when that initial crush was gone, the cup was still there with the same couple of dollar bills in it.
We were going out and weren't in the mood to pregame, so we didn't have any of that, just a bit of crudités.
I know when I'm at a bar and the bartender comps a drink that just means I leave a bigger tip. Do folks leave tips in these cases? We left after just a few minutes so didn't get to see if things changed later on. No idea is the guests were domestic or international as I know that can make a difference. FWIW, we did leave a couple bucks at b'fast when we asked for more fruit and the attendant left for 5 minutes to get some.
It's been 4 years since the last Club Tipping thread so thought I'd start a new one
This is really interesting and I think it's location dependent (cultural). I was recently traveling in the South Pacific (Australia, Fiji, Samoa, and American Samoa) and observed a culture of no individual tipping whatsoever however they did have a communal tipping for the Staff's Christmas holiday fund which I gladly contributed to and believe that service shouldn't be dependent on tips so I make it a point of being culturally appropriate wherever I am and pay my respects to the staff for providing excellent customer service accordingly.
