I'd second the advice of getting a day room in a hotel at Gatwick or London Bridge or Victoria (or even Brighton if you want to go the other way and spend some time by the sea). You'll possibly save a bit of money over what you are proposing and have a better experience. Note that some hotels don't advertise rates for a 'day room' online so if that is the case, choose your hotel and then call them directly.
