On a flight Thursday from D/FW Airport to 30,000 feet over El Paso and back, calls were made and received on standard cellphones with new onboard technology that linked an American Airlines MD-80 jetliner to a satellite and then to the Sprint cellular network. Some passengers sent text messages.
It was a one-shot test on a non-scheduled special flight by American and the high-tech firm Qualcomm. The Federal Aviation Administration approved the the test, and the companies removed the equipment afterward. Passengers included reporters and company representatives.
Can you hear me now?

Say it ain't so! Flights are the only time I get a blessed reprieve from my cell phone ... and even worse imagine being on a plane sitting next to someone who talks on their cell phone for hours and hours.
