That 2hr drive is not a comfortable one.
Thanks for your feedback NWIFlyer.
While many Romanians are understandably very skeptical about any kind of infrastructure project [just look at the state of the motorway network, with only a few miles being completed in recent years despite all the advanced plans/ongoing construction], there is still some hope for Brasov Airport.

The project is unique in a way because it completely paid for by the city/county without federal or big business support. The runway is built apparently, as is a fence around the entire airport, but so far that is it. However, the Brasov City Council recently communicated another tender to construct more parts of the airport, including the stretch of tarmac for aeroplanes to park/disembark passengers, as well as a pathway to link it with the runway. They are still investing big sums of money in it.

Of course, then there is still the terminal to be build, a control tower as well as necessary safety precautions to install. The city council plans to have the airport operational by 2020. Knowing how fast these projects go here, I highly doubt that they will manage by then. That said, the project is still really going on and I have more confidence in liberal-run local authorities in Transylvanian cities than the corrupt socialist bunch which rules the country on a federal level [it's a whole different mindset people have in Transylvania compared to Wallachia]. Apparently, the city/county of Brasov are running surpluses in their budget, so it's not that there is no money available.

In my opinion, there is a case for the airport as long as there are still no proper motorways linking the heart of the country with Bucharest across the Carpathians Mountains, or to other cities such as Cluj. Yes, you can reach OTP from Brasov in two-and-a-half to three hours if traffic is smooth, but the road (although beautiful) is no fun driving being single lane and heavily clogged up at times. If there is sudden snowfall, a tree falling down, or an accident, it often causes major traffic jams. Besides Brasov and nearby places such as Bran and Sinaia being one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country already, there are imho also big opportunities for winter sports if Romanian tourism authorities could finally get its act together and promote the country (it's laughable to see how much the country is lagging behind to Bulgaria in this). Brasov Airport also has (financial) support from nearby cities/counties as they see too how it can benefit their citizens(if I remember correctly, the city of Miercurea Ciuc recently also paid into the project.
