I think it more likely Marriott only wants to deal with one # per person. But due to differences in the numbering between legacy SPG and Marriott #s , they had to convert the old SPG # into a new Marriott #. Now you have 2 accounts both of which are Marriott #s . Marriott is not "forcing" anyone to merge their 2 separate accounts (though they are recommending it.) When you combine, there is not a "new" # created. The combined/merged account will have either the old Marriott # or the new converted SPG number. It is supposed to be your choice. But if there are issues, and you really wanted to keep your old Marriott #, I would not have initiated the combining of the two accounts from the SPG side. I would have either waited or called Marriott for help.
