Why not light refreshments offered to all, more substantial stuff available to those who want to purchase it?
That way the airline could be seen (for once) as responding to what passengers say they want, without taking away elements of service.
BA does - it calls that section of economy "Club Europe" though
Is there any airline that is offering both included "snack/meal" and is also offering a comprehensive food for purchase on board?
What people want is low fares - the less that is included, the lower the fare can be
