perhaps it’s depressing to say this, but it’s 2018 and this is what OP needed to do in this situation. anytime something legally significant is happening, your best bet is to immediately pull out your phone and record video. i would prefer the “turn around and punch the guy in the mouth” approach in this scenario personally, but i suppose there are some drawbacks of living in civilized society that we have to respect.
