This was in June, but apparently, there is a showdown brewing between US Customs and the Nigerian government. Could this be behind the scrutiny of checked bags?
Looks like this might become common with flights directly from Lagos. Could the US government even try to pressure Delta into cancelling the flight?

This doesn't even make sense.
Nigeria isn't going to be looking for items that are banned by US customs, they're supposedly looking for security threats.
If they don't inspect out-going luggage, the flight has arrived and the luggage has been off-loaded without incident, presumably that means there was no threat in checked baggage - so there's no reason to conduct a search on arrival in the US for that reason.
