Unless lied about his DOB he would've had to have an adult onboard to be able to checkin. I remember traveling frequently UM as a child fondly. Always remember the passengers that helped like you did (opening a bag, cutting food, etc). Probably why i have no issue with children next to me on planes today. Also dont mind assisting UM or even accompanied children when needed.
