Extending a rental if extending it would exceed the limit on the card used to make it

Hello

I am considering renting a vehicle for a period in the USA. If I decided to extend the rental beyond this time, then when I call up Hertz to do so, do they charge the card (or increase the hold on it) then and there; or, is the additional sum merely due upon return of the vehicle after the extended period.

The card I am considering using has sufficient funds for the initial rental period. Were I to extend the rental, then whilst an extension would exceed the limit on the first credit card, it would not be a problem to pay the increase in balance due on a different credit card at the end of the rental.

The reason for preferring not to book two consecutive contracts outright is due to uncertainty in plans: namely, whether I will be returning to the rental location at the specified interval.

Thanks for any replies.
