Hi NewbieRunner, thanks for the welcome. I believe you meant to say "fortunate", not "unfortunate".
While I have never flown directly from Canada to FRA, I think it might be possible, since I believe Canada is considered a "clean" country, like the US. I just checked FlightStats for LH 471, and on August 25, it arrived at gate B20A. It is quite possible a LH employee was there to let connecting passengers enter the non-schengen B gates.
