I was just wondering this week how may EXP have "given up" on upgrades and just buy premium cabin seats outright and just are happy to bank the extra miles and bonuses. I'm an SFO based EP (175k EQM and $47k EQD for the year so far)...and for my domestics, I've been doing a lot of this, or at least on one-part of the r/t, especially if the return is through a major hub (DFW or ORD) late in the week and it was a quick turnaround. Figure best to secure the upgrade and personally pay the minor fare difference for part of the trip. Typically my outbound, I can play around with and chose flights that will most likely get the upgrade. But when I'm headed home, I just want to get here and not screw around.
