I'm an SFO based EP (175k EQM and $47k EQD for the year so far)...and for my domestics, I've been doing a lot of this, or at least on one-part of the r/t, especially if the return is through a major hub (DFW or ORD) late in the week and it was a quick turnaround. Figure best to secure the upgrade and personally pay the minor fare difference for part of the trip. Typically my outbound, I can play around with and chose flights that will most likely get the upgrade. But when I'm headed home, I just want to get here and not screw around.
