thanks all. if there exists a bag agreement, they should do it when presented with both tickets-- that has been my experience elsewhere.
I figure it pays to ask since sometimes there isn't a deal in place however-- coming back from GLA this summer via LGW, the US Air passengers were quite upset that they were the only ones having to claim and re-check bags at LGW [since US let their agreement with BA lapse].
