I am of modest means, and without MileagePlus there is no way I could have afforded to pay the tens of thousands out of pocket for so many lifetime memory trips for me and my family.
I believe OP is talking about chasing the whole MP status tiers and benefits every year rather than earning free flights (which is probably even more irrational these days with the PQD based RDMs). If you're still flying to earn free flights, then you're doing it the hard way...
