Actually, I'm surprised it's not the other way around. While trains have been getting faster and faster, airplanes have had a tendency of getting slower. Not the planes per se, but due to congested airports, airlines have been adding more and more padding to their schedules over the decades, making the flights look slower. AY5/6 is slower today than AY 105/106 used to be 20 years ago, for instance (or was it 5/6 back then already?). Heck, even HEL-ARN used to be 55 min but is now 60 min.

Also, when SFO was launched, AY published an optimistic schedule, to which they added some 20 minutes extra per leg before the route started. Perhaps the same will happen with LAX, too?
