How much construction is there? When is it over?
Heavy.construction occurs weekdays 8-5, but they start up engines at about 7:45, including horns.
Tryggvagata street on one side of the hotel is fully involved. The Hafnarstræti side doesn’t have any construction on it, though looking down toward the (black building) I think the red building (shown above), empty and coveted with graffiti, will be demolished or refurbished extensively. (The Front Desk says construction is supposed to be over in September, street reopened in November.)
Below, views from room 409. 1) Down Tryggvargata. The green sward and Hill in the distance is south, and is the Arnarhöll, with the statue of Ingölfur Arnarson, Iceland’s first settler (~870 AD). 2) Up Tryvargatta. 3) View directly down from #409, where a good part of the street and stone walkway have just been removed with machinery. 4) Some of the machinery operating on Tryvargatta.
This is not looking like a project with speedy completion, as there’s also construction going on at the buildings across the street. When it is over, Tryvargatta will be the easy way to Lærkjagata (where there are some good restaurants, such as Messinn and Icelandic Street Food).
