It happens with paid biz tickets as well as upgrades. I had a paid biz ticket from EZE-ORD-SAN. I misconnected in ORD, and flew in coach from ORD-SAN. I had top priority to get on the plane, and in fact was happy to get my middle coach seat. There was a college basketball tournament in town, and all flights in were full.
