One of the most useful things for me over the years - I have a toiletries bag that stays packed for trips with duplicates for what I use at home. Shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, makeup, brush, comb, aspirin, bandaids, etc. That way I don’t forget to pack any of those necessities. If you check your bag, throw in a pair of scissors and a pocket knife. I also have a little camping set of utensils which work much better than the plastic utensils that come with takeout food.
I like finding takeout and delivery places (hooray for GrubHub) when I’m on the road, not for every meal, but for some. When on solo trips, I get tired of spending an hour in a restaurant, especially if I know I have e-mail and prep work waiting for me back at the hotel.
And I agree with one other things folks have mentioned. Try to find at least one non-work thing to do on a business trip, so that you actually get to experience something of the place you’re visiting, not just the airport, hotel, and customer site.
