update: i signed up for lufthansa's FF program and tried to buy the flight to see if seat selection was prior to purchase and it was. so i was able to see that there are four seats available, in two sets of two. fingers crossed the award availability opens up on united!
You can view available seats at the time of making a booking even if not a member of LH's FF program. The seat map is not always accurate though, with at least one seat blocked off for the bassinet position. When hitting the radio button for your preferred flight on the booking screen there's a link to the seatmap for the flight.
