It is my understanding that SFO built something nice for AA to induce them to temporarily move terminals. Remember back when the terminal was announced in 2008 VX was still very much a startup, the financial crisis had not yet happened, AW had just acquired US, and AA was still winding down the STL and SJU hubs. Planning for a terminal starts years before an announcement, so the environment was quite different.
