As an update, I've been informed by a specialist on the new credit line that my application was actually an insta-deny that never hit the credit bureaus, because they did not recognize the account as closed. Apparently it recognized I already had a Marriott credit card account with chase, thus no hard pull on my credit report and denial.
I was told to give it a couple days. The rep at Chase then asked if I had a balance on the card (even though it was closed, the next payment was not due yet). Rep told me to get the old MR Visa to zero balance (I wasn't carrying a balance, but I had my statement balance + autopay date in the future) and wait a couple days, then re-apply, and system should recognize that I no longer have MR Visa + highly likely approval.
Hope this helps anyone who is trying to churn the bonus before the 08/26/2018 signup bonus changes that prevent you from getting the bonus on the chase Card if you currently hold the SPG Amex.
