Based on replies from other posters it seems like the recommendation is route via SYD and get the new sleeper seats. That is what I am going to do.
Based on price- I agree a basic r/t LAX to AUS in J is expensive, but I happen to think that my LAX/HKG/BKK/SIN/SYD/BNE/SYD/LAX ALL IN J (COMBINATION OF CX AND Qantas ) @$4900.00 plus taxes is a good deal under the OW circle Pacific
