I think the proper thing to do is tell an FA ahead of time "I'm giving up this seat so this couple can sit together. Please ensure I get asked my meal choice as if I were sitting here."
Something like that. Though I doubt a status-less person would even realize the ramifications beforehand.
I will use this method going forward.
ALL: Please realize I don't THINK I should get priority meal choice as an E75. DYKWIA complexes make me crazy. I simply was curious. The initial point was I was curious if I was being an <redacted> for usurping the passenger who paid the same fare I did and stealing his meal. I did this from a place of "that's my seat" not "I'm more important than you because I have an utterly meaningless status that I have done nothing to earn except spend my company's money and put my butt in the seat"
