Checked in a smallish cardboard box as luggage, and upon arrival at YVR, it took 45 minutes longer to come out than the suitcase. Both had priority tags (does oversized get priority treatment?). At YYZ, the small box had to be checked in at the oversized baggage area (hard to navigate through all the long lines blocking the way), and was processed by an indifferent service worker (who sat at a desk way back and wouldn't stand to return the boarding pass). Next time if I need to check in a box, I will place it inside a sports bag or something to contain it that looks like luggage to avoid the check in at oversized baggage area, and upon arrival having to wait at the normal carousel as well as the oversized baggage area.
