I definitely searched CDG-DAY, not caring where we made our connection. After Saturday's meltdown, Mrs. Goes will resist ever changing ar EWR again -- we ended up spending the night there, getting up at oh-dark-thirty (easily done after three weeks in Europe), renting a car and driving home. It was not an altogether happy experience, though the foggy Poconos hills at dawn were beautiful. However, as noted below, the original booking was an Everyday economy award; it was the somewhat irregular upgrade request that made two of the seats Business Saver.

Your receipt said "130000/S60K-S0-E70K." That's 60K for Saver business on the outbound, 0K for the excursionist perk (economy or business), and 70K for Everyday economy on the return. If that's how you were booked, it looks like it priced properly.
If you were able to waitlist for business saver on the return, and cleared successfully, you could request a 10K rebate, but one might be tempted just to let it go since you shouldn't have been able to waitlist in the first place.
I'm confused, though. What unflown segments are you trying to get refunded? If you didn't fly them, how did they lose your luggage?
I can only plead my jetlag for your confusion. Thanks, WineCountryUA, for fixing my erroneous reference to "Everyday saver" which of course doesn't exist. Our bags ended up in CVG because they followed one of the itineraries one or more of our three PNRs had for a while during the IROPS. It's a good thing none of the three of us tried actually flying on Saturday, but our bags did make it to CVG by 3:30PM ET. My wife drove the hour and a quarter down there and back this morning to retrieve them.
A very helpful agent I reached very quickly last night suggested I file a Customer Care request for hotel and rental car reimbursements -- a not-insignificant expense amounting to over $600 including gas and tolls. I paid the fees on these itineraries with my MP Explorer Mastercard, and actually selected the cheap trip insurance add-on. Should I start with United here, or the CC and AIG insurance?
Many thanks for everyone's very useful advice.
