When a Haboob hits PHX and the BA Jumbo!

So last night we were sat in our favourite BA First lounge, watching the first 744 push back for LHR, and then waiting for the second one to land. It was all looking such a lovely evening...

And then a Haboob (a desert dust storm) hit, enveloping a big part of the city, including Sky Harbor airport. It appeared like a huge wall of dust, and then suddenly the view was very different. Sirens sounded around the airfield/airport, and the lights on all the building began flashing blue (which staff on the ground said "was not a good sign"). This was followed by howling wind, and then rain. And then an hour later it had cleared again and the lights were flashing yellow, and ground handling operations resumed. We pushed back a little late, but the crew got us to LHR pretty much on time. Amazing how the weather changed so much. When I'd dropped off the hire car a couple of hours earlier it was 106 degrees and glorious sunshine!

An amazing spectacle to see! 25 flights were diverted and most departure delayed by around 90 mins I read in the news.

To all those going to the 'PHX Do', hope you swerve these weather giants - we were only in town for a fortnight and had two of them!

First 744 pushes back - looking like a decent evening...

Haboob arrives...

And covers the airport...

And then an hour later it's cleared - but wet!
