If I think of possible analogies such as buying an expensive car with lots of customisable options, having a suit/dress custom made, shopping for outfits in expensive boutiques, I think you would be in the right if you asked exactly for what you wanted, especially if you seemed to come from a place where you are well informed and/or compentent rather than just stubborn. Obviously, as other people have pointed out, the way you approach it and you address the person who’s assisting you will make a massive difference in how they perceive you.
That's definitely an interesting analogy! I suppose the main difference with the car sale etc comparison is that the person you are talking to does not (to my knowledge) have the carrot of a commission if they manage the sale which could be quite an incentive! I do like both of the last two points though: the one about help varying so I'm hoping that the "customer who did his homework" brings variety compared to those who come with very generic expectations and want the agent to do everything. As for the previous point, if proof is in the pudding, my requests proved successful so hopefully it justified them!
