If there is no space pressure then yes, great, but precisely, that does not always work. I have done that to have people getting back to me saying "bucket x is not available on your flight" (see my points about checking with married segments, point of sale, etc). When you are dealing with an itinerary on which two flights have only 1 redemption seat available as was the case here, the potential delay could be fatal to your hoped deal and itinerary.
