If I'm not mistaken, the T&C say that the award has to be applied prior to the stay. I believe that other posters said that the hotel could not apply the award at check-in and they had to contact WoH.
Just speculation, but maybe after you went to your room the hotel staff tried to actually apply the award and was told by WoH that it was ineligible and that might be why they were calling you.
In any case, it worked out for you, and as you said, it never hurts to ask...
