Unfortunatley, Bolivia is a high fare market. There are only 14 flights a week between the United States and Bolivia, all from Miami, all with typiclly high fares because demand far outstrips supply. You're better bet is trying LAB (Lloyd Aereo Bolivano) as they are typically cheaper than American. Also, you may be able to find a cheaper fare if you fly LAB out of MIA on a Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday, since those flights stop en route to Santa Cruz (Wednesday and Saturday stop in Manaus, Brazil; Sunday stops in Cochabamba, Bolivia).

$600 or so is considered a lowfare to Bolivia. LAB's "lowest" fares are typically in the high-$600 range. Your best bet is to go through a student travel service. You can also consider connections, though even those are limited (try TACA and Aerolineas Argentinas).

Don't expect a bargain, though. Bolivia is a very expensive market to fly to.
