Definition of a segment

I remember reading, and always thought that a segment was considered to be a take off and landing.

When did this change?

I recently flew some interisland flights in Hawaii. I was going from Kona to Lihue, which they don't do non-stop.

I bought a first class ticket, and was expecting to receive 2 segments and 2500 miles for this. (500 miles each segment, 500 bonus miles each segment-gold member, and 250 miles each segment for class of service bonus).

Due to the fact that it was all one flight number, I only received 1250 miles.

Does anyone know when this changed?? I could have very easily just done two seperate flights, and might have actually made it sooner, as the flight was delayed for quite a while!!

I am guessing this is another one of those changes America West made very quietly in the rules this year.
