25,000 miles is correct for 4 500 milers. Yep...it's a lousy deal for most.

The price went up about the same time that United raised the mileage requirements for most award upgrades (more than a year ago I think). At the same time they raised the purchase price for Premier members from $125 for 4 to $200 for 4.

This is double the price that American currently charges of $25 each.

American's 1K equivalents (Executive Platinum) don't have to pay anything at all for 500 milers, as they don't need 'em. Unlimited domestic upgrades at 100 hours for AA Executive Platinums.
