I had two flights in international business class from New York to South America and the agents were adamant that only Polaris flights are eligible. Nobody cared about that the website also says "International Star Alliance Flight in Business Class". Well it's not my fault there is no Polaris to South America...
Was the intercontinental flight leaving from EWR? If not, they were right to deny access. Also, IIRC there are some destinations in South America that don’t qualify.
Also, all UA flights to Deep South America are classified as Polaris. It may not have the new seat. But Polaris is the name for intercontinental business class.
