Thousands and thousands of people seem to do it every day, and live. I've never seen anyone have a meltdown when leaving customs @ OAK after their Volaris flights, nor anyone having panic attacks prior to them, nor have I seen anyone @ MEX suffering similar.

That said, I've never been on them. If you can avoid a MEX connection, do it. Even though you're flying domestic/domestic, the ground situation @ MEX isn't ideal - overcrowded taxiways, dumpy terminal. And you make your flight (what, 3.5 hours?) into a 6 to 7 hour ordeal.
