I'm a gold as well. Gold is a spotty classification due to the ability to obtain it without actually sleeping in a *wood bed. I have witnessed few real benefits in about 20 stays as gold other than slight upgrades and occasional recognition. I'm sure that many of the travel experts here have obtained a suite while a Gold preferred, but it is extremely rare at best IME.
The only ways that I know of to obtain Platinum membership without staying the requisite nights are:
1. Status match (as you mentioned)
2. Amex Centurion card (the black card that is like $2M per year)
