snagging an S fare on both legs only cost me a little more than $200. The interesting thing is that the two legs of my flight were priced separately due to the greater than 4 hour layover. Maybe there is more competition in the LAX and BOS market and the RNO and LAX market instead of the RNO-BOS market.
As a college student, I gotta save my $$$, which means I get to waste some time in LAX. Although, I will meet one of my friends in LA for lunch during my layover.

Just dont want to lug the bags around during lunch.
Good point on the fares. However, you would have gotten the same fare even if the layover was less than four hours. Most booking engines are smart enough to price two fares end on end if it costs less than one through fare. Having more than four hours only means that you must buy two fares, which would not be beneficial if the through fare is cheaper.
Worst case scenario, if UA refuses to check the bags through, you pick up your bags and immediately check them in again, because it will be less than four hours before the RNO flight by then. You certainly don't need to drag them down Sepulveda Blvd to In 'N Out Burger or wherever you happen to be going to eat.
