My apologies for digging up this couple month old thread, but I recently had a Trip Delay claim that is allowed under the old rules, but might not be under the new rules. Long story short, I was flying JFK-CLT-DFW and had to overnight in CLT after a delayed departure from JFK forced a misconnect to the last flight of the night to DFW. None of the flight delays were >3 hours individually, but I got to my destination about 10 hours late.
Now to the fun part. I submitted all the info in the world, the benefits admin denied my claim stating "not a covered reason" though they didn't say why it wasn't a covered reason. I asked for them to reconsider it and they denied it again. I asked to speak to a supervisor/adjuster and was never transferred to them, and my requests for a call back were never honored. Once I received the denial letter over a month after I filed the claim, I filed a BBB complaint with The Warranty Group (aka Virginia Surety) and the next day received a phone call from a woman from benefits services who told me what they believed they were missing and the reason for denial. Turns out they had trouble reading one of the documents I had already provided, which was the delay explanation from AA. I sent them a higher definition copy and my claim was approved within a day. Just waiting on the check now.
So if you're denied, don't throw in the towel. It seems they just deny and stonewall figuring people will give up. It was a PITA dealing with these folks 2-3 years ago when I had a reimbursement claim on my Citi Premier card. With the nail going into the trip insurance I'm planning to cancel my Prestige this month since my AF just hit.
