Yes, that is a great way to get some value from them. Unfortunately they took away the 1.6cpp redemption for AA (and AA code shared) flights but we used to that a lot.
When I had a big glut of them I was also occasionally doing statement credits (at only 1cpp) even though that is not an optimal usage.
